NY & DC in seven days

Hey there!

we need some input. making plans for a trip to the east coast in early May (sarah's first time!) and we've gotta blow through two huge cities in a short amount of time - we definitely want to make the most of it. So... we need the scoop on the best places to spend our time, maybe 'off-the-path' sites to visit, or your favorite restaurants in the area?? here are some topics of interest...

restaurants & fooood
museums
parks
shopping (or best-deal shopping)
nightlife
shows

yeah... so if you've been to New York City (we'll be staying in Manhattan) or the D.C. area, or if you have some 'have-to-see' favorites, we'd love some advice. thanks!!

NYC: Joe's Shanghai (I think that's the name. they make great soup dumplings) Billy's Bakery (for great cupcakes); Good Enough To Eat (great brunch place); Veniero's (for some awesome Italian desserts)

D.C.: Holocaust museum; Raku (sushi); Hee Been (korean/japanese buffet in Alexandria); National Gallery of Art; La Madeleine

ellen :)

What can I say? I love to eat!

NYC:
- fat witch bakery in chelsea market: awesome oprah-approved brownies)
- the met: huuuge museum, so you'd need 7 days just to get through the whole thing)
- union square: farmer's market daily, lots of shoe stores, lots of restaurants
- corner bistro: very cheap burgers in the greenwich village area, but there's always a line
- soho: lots of cool shopping
- park avenue: lots of window shopping because that's all most of us can afford
- pastis: yummy famous french place in the meatpacking district, often frequented by celebs
- beard papa: owned by japanese people (i think) who make really good cream puffs
- bleecker street: tons of good and cheap eats
- grimaldi's: best pizza place. it's in brooklyn heights (first stop out of manhattan), but it's worth it, especially if you top it off with ice cream from the brooklyn ice cream factory.

haha i love nyc. there's so much more...and you're making me miss it...have fun!

haha i just went to NYC during spring break! we stayed in times square for a really cheap price, so if you want the info for that hotel, just let me know. it was a pretty decent hotel for that price and location.

i have a whole spreadsheet of our trip on file, so if you want to see what we did everyday (i'm a vacation nazi...), i have it planned down to the hour and convenience based on location. AHHAA.

oooh, i just read a previous comment, and i have to respond to that. Joe's Shanghai - not a big deal considering we have the exact same restaurant in houston. someone i went with desperately wanted to eat there too, so we went, and you know what? it tasted like houston. probably because we HAVE that restaurant in houston! :)

New York:
To Do - Ride the subway, Ground Zero, any show on Broadway (half price tickets at TKTS south location has shorter lines - done it 2xs and it works yet depends on what shows are available), the MET, Redeemer church, parts of Central park, Joe's Shanghai (if you have not had big juicy dumplings before), stay up all night ...
Photo Spots - Harbor looking towards Statue of Liberty, Top of Empire State Building, Bull in front of Wall Street, Saks on the real 5th Ave, Times square at night ...

DC:
To Do: Ride the subway - very clean, Holocaust museum, Spy Museum - really cool, new Air & Space Museum (at Dulles - has the shuttle, sr71 blackbird, enola gay ...), all the big memorials (vietnam war, korean war, ww ...), zoo if you like panda bears, as much of the smithsonian and historical stuff as possible ...
Photo Spots - so many! in front of Capital, White House, Iwo Jima, all memorials, cherry blossums - are they in bloom?

Maryland:
To Do - Aquarium, eating crab of any kind (cakes, bombs ...)
Photo Spots - In the Harbor shots ...

Hope that helps! I will be in Silver Spring from Wednesday (10th) to Monday (15th) so maybe we can meet up on one of the overlapping days!
